What Is Zero Waste?

Zero waste is a movement, started to try and reduce the amount of trash we produce. The idea is built around the 5R concept - Refuse, Reduce, Reuse, Recycle, Responsible disposal.

With the invention of supermarkets, our way of shopping has drastically changed. Every product we buy, is packed in single use plastic packaging and at the checkout counter, we usually put all of our products into a single use plastic bag. That's a lot of garbage, we produce every day. It's estimated that an average European produces around 500kg of trash every year - 90% is plastic, with plastic bags and bottles being the most commonly found type of trash during beach cleanups. If we continue down this road, by 2050 there will be more plastic in our oceans than fish.
Think about it: The average time single-use plastic is used, is around 11 minutes and then it exists in our environment forever, because plastic never biodegrades.

The fact that a huge percentage of our plastic waste ends up in our oceans is very concerning. Marine animals and sea birds often mistake plastics for food.

At least 100 million marine animals die each year from plastic pollution.

So what are the alternatives?

Two words pretty much sum it up: Reusable and Biodegradable. Start ditching single use plastic products, such as bags, bottles, straws, plastic cutlery and replace them with reusable products, such as cotton bags, glass water bottles, bamboo or steel straws and bamboo cutlery. Of course these are just a few basic examples. Zero waste concept goes much further. Find out more.
