Solar power for your home or Photo-Voltaic (PV for short) power systems have been around for several decades. Within the last ten years the technology race to create more efficient, cheaper solar panels has become a multinational competition to see who can dominate this market as it skyrockets towards common usage amongst homeowners the world over. What does this have to do with your home? Well, everything. That is if you are interested in going solar at your home or business.

The technology push to produce more efficient solar panels means that you get more power, more consistently. The competition means you get a lot more power for less money. That is good news! Coupled with tax credits on adding a renewable energy source to your home or business equals a prime opportunity to do so.

Solar power for your home greatly reduces the greenhouse gasses caused by power production in traditional methods such as coal or propane-fired power stations.

Toronto does have a good percentage of water turbine-generated power from the many dams we have in this state, but we still lean heavily on fossil fuel and natural gas created power.

Here in Toronto we actually have ample sunlight, receiving on average 57% of sunshine days a year. That is according to NOAA based on a 55 year study. If you decide to stay tied to the grid, Maine is an annualized net metering state which means any surplus generated on a monthly basis goes into a bank that is used when you use more power than your solar panel array is producing. They have a wealth of knowledge on their website and have studied the results meticulously since installing the system in 1995.

Solar power can be a large investment

Solar power can be a large investment, on average (at the time of this writing) the price per watt installed is between $3.50 and $5.00. A 1 Kilowatt (KW) system is equal to 1,000 watts and most homes could use at least 2KW to be worthwhile. Unless you have a very good handle on electricity and wiring, we strongly suggest getting a professional contractor to handle this for you. If you do decide to give it a go yourself, be sure to get the proper permits and inspections along the way, as this could save your house (literally) in the way of safety and insurance claims.

Solar Power Incentives

Due to the dramatic decrease in solar installation and equipment costs, state and federal tax rebates that spurred the growth of solar power in Canada are no longer available. However, there are still several incentives offered by Canada and the federal government. And let’s not forget the savings you can expect to see in your energy bills every single month.
